FAQ

Is there WiFi?

Wifi is available. At this point in time we do have to ask that you do NOT stream movies and YouTube because we don’t have unlimited data. However, if you want to watch a movie, we have a large selection of DVD’s for a wide range of tastes. There is a TV and DVD player in your room.

Do you have parking available?

Guests may park free and secure in our driveway.

If you are on a bike tour, we have a fenced yard and secure storage for your bicycle.

Do you allow early check in?

When it’s possible, we do. However, we can’t promise ahead of time. Best to check with us that morning.

Our usual check out time is 11 am but often guests head out to their next adventure before that. When they do, we can have your room clean and ready before 3 pm – our usual check in time.

Do you serve breakfast?

Absolutely. Coffee, tea, orange juice, fresh local eggs, bacon or sausage, English muffins from a local bakery, butter, homemade jam and local fresh fruit from the Annapolis Valley when in season.

We accommodate gluten-free and vegan requirements if you let us know beforehand.

If the weather is good you can even dine al fresco on the deck and watch the fishing boats out on the Bay.

What about local restaurants ?

There are a number of local options, some within 15 minutes of our location. We may also be able to recommend some good spots in the areas you plan to visit during your day.

What time is high tide?

That changes each day. We post the times for the coming week so you’ll always know.

What is there to do in Margaretsville?

Margaretsville is an historic village on the Bay of Fundy with a unique ‘salt shaker’ lighthouse visible from our home. It is open during the summer months and the sunsets from its deck are breath-taking. Be sure to keep your camera handy!

You can also fish off the end of the wharf at high tide or beach comb and hike along the shoreline to the Margaretsville Falls during low tide.

At night, grab a bag of marshmallows and build a fire of driftwood on the beach while you enjoy the spectacular Fundy sunsets.

The Evergreen Theatre is just 3 km up the road and is known all over the Maritimes for bringing the best of live performance to the province. Visit their website to find out what’s coming up next.

We are only minutes from the Annapolis Valley which offers plenty of amenities, including shopping, golf and the Canadian Military Aviation Museum. Numerous other tourist attractions and golf courses are within an easy drive

  • 45 minutes to Wolfville or Annapolis Royal
  • 60 minutes to Blomidon Park or Digby.
  • 90 minutes to Halifax, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay or Kejimkujik Park

How far are you from the airport and ferries?

  • 90 minutes from the Robert Stanfield International Airport in Halifax
  • 60 minutes from the Digby Ferry terminal
  • 2 hours from the Yarmouth Ferry terminal

Because this is rural Nova Scotia, you will need your own vehicle to get here. Guests may park free and secure in our driveway.

If you are on a bike tour, we have a fenced yard and secure storage for your bicycle.

A little about us…

In 1872, shipbuilder J.A. Balcolm built and opened his general store here in Margaretsville. He sold everything a thriving community needed from housewares to hardware and of course, groceries. The upper floor served as a community centre but at Christmas it transformed into a wonderland of toys and gifts.

It operated as the village general store until the 1990’s, modernising with each new owner as they kept up with the times. You can still see where the old gas pumps were added on the east side and the Periwinkle Restaurant offered take-out. In fact, the dining hall overlooking the Bay where folks enjoyed their fish and chips is still on the property and is now my art studio.

When the restaurant and store finally closed for good, the building became a private home. Today our BnB occupies the main floor and we live in the storekeeper’s apartment upstairs.

The original shiplap ceiling and overhead beams add a unique ambience to the main areas while the floorboards still creak underfoot like in the ‘good ole days’. Two modern bedrooms complete with private bathrooms now welcome our guests where J.A. Balcolm’s store once welcomed shoppers. As you’d expect, the living area is spacious and open, with a stunning view of the Bay of Fundy.

Since moving to Nova Scotia in 2016, we have appreciated the slower pace of life here on the East Coast. We enjoy the outdoors, beachcombing along the shore and meeting new people so it seemed only natural to open a BnB and share this beautiful part of Canada.

You’ll find we’re laid-back hosts. Your privacy and comfort are paramount to us during your stay in our historic home. We live upstairs in the former storekeeper’s apartment so we’re always available but not in your space.

Aprille is also a working artist and you’re invited to visit her Stony Bay Studio while you stay with us. She offers painting and sketching workshops throughout the summer months. The schedule is posted to this site as soon as its available. And if you’d like a workshop arranged just for you, family and friends, be sure to ask!

We’d love to have you come and stay awhile.
